I will be travelling alone in October and I was wondering about staying in hostels with mixed dorm rooms, has anyone ever had any problems? Is this a bad idea? I have stayed in dozens of mixed dorm hostels and as a woman have never had any problems. Yeah I have awoken to a puking fatguy 2 feet away from me over a thrash can in his undies….
Coed dorms: What do you think?
Saw that most hostels in Amsterdam offer mixed dorms. Does it mean that men and women sleep in the same room? And if yes, how can one change her clothes? I quote the Tsayokay website at: [original link] Does the hostel offer separate single-sex rooms or dormitory-style rooms?
By Lauren Juliff. As you travel, you'll come across hostels with both mixed dorms and same-sex dorms, with the former being much more common. Dispel the myths and take a look at the pros and cons. The main advantage to mixed rooms is getting to meet a wider variety of travelers from around the world, which, of course, is what travel is all about! The bathrooms are usually grosser if you're sharing them with guys, though, so if you don't want to deal with that, you may want to opt for a same-sex room.
